Guest Post – Stranded? Your Options

[Editor's Note: This is a guest post from my awesome girlfriend. Enjoy!]

I guess winter just gave up on central Ohio this year.  And that means an earlier to start to my biking season.  Unlike Biking Columbus, I am a warm weather biker only.  I hate the cold and I really don’t like biking in it.   I don’t know if you noticed, but there have been some severe storms out there this year too.  What’s a biker to do when they bike somewhere and then don’t feel comfortable biking home?  (Various reasons including weather, being inebriated, not wanting to bike home in the dark, or maybe you just don’t feel like it)

Columbus has a few options for bikers:

COTA – Put your bike on the bus! It’s easy, and the bus drivers are usually very helpful. I’ve even seen them remind people who were about to forget their bikes to take them.

Guaranteed Ride Home – Provided by The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Committee, this program is specifically for commuters.  Just sign up and MORPC will reimburse you for 90% of cab fare and 15% of the tip. It can be used 4 times a year.

Taxi – Getting your bike into a taxi may be a little more time than just getting yourself into a taxi, but you can always make up for that with a tip.  No one really hails a cab in Columbus, you’ll need to call a service and tell them where you are to get picked up.  While you’re waiting if you can take your wheels off your bike it would make it a lot easier.  You may also be able to request a van.

Walk – I know this is not always an option, but it is something bikers may forget. A 2 mile trip is completely walkable, even if it takes you much longer than biking.

Call a friend – That’s what friends are for.

Those are the options I could think of, maybe there are more.  Do you know of any other options in Columbus for stranded bikers?
