Biking in Rain

It's obviously a personal decision on what constitutes too much rain for a person not to bike. I will bike in light showers but I normally bus or drive if weather is much worse than that. I limit my biking because the stopping distance is increased and it's just a bit miserable to bike in rain.

For me, rain gear is a must. By rain gear I mean a good set of rain pants, rain jacket, waterproof shoes, and waterproof gloves and a helmet cap are optional. I use J&G Cyclewear and it works well for what I put it through although on the few times I have ventured out during downpours, I have noticed some leakage, especially at the crotch where there is a zipper.

As for what to wear underneath your clothes, I just always wear normal clothes. Jeans/pants/shirts/whatever. It's really not too hard. But to look at that situation in a list format, remember to wear the following when raining:

  • Rain Pants
  • Rain Jacket
  • Waterproof shoes
And the following are optional:
  • Waterproof gloves
  • A helmet cap which prevents the top of your head from getting too wet

So on Friday when I biked in the rain, I had the first three in that list on and to be honest, I didn't hate it.
